Puawaitanga (the flowering) is one of the first New Zealand Art history periods. Hei tiki is made of Pounamu (greenstone) and also commonly can have paua for the eyes. Hei tiki is a symbol of fertility as it represents a child embryo (Anderson 40), it as worn as a charm in the hopes of having a baby, or to boost fertility. It is commonly worn around the neck, and more woman than men wear it, to show their fertility.
It relates back to its period of design (Te Puawaitanga) The flowering, because it can be seen as a fertility charm and therefore represents 'the flowering' of their tribe/ancestors.
